Description

The planting stone at Althorp is an early 17th-century limestone ashlar structure. It is a rectangular block set on a plinth and features an inscription that reads, "This wood was planted by Sir John Spencer Knight father of Robert Lord Spencer in the year of our Lord 1589," along with the Spencer coat of arms above the inscription. The stone is enclosed by railings topped with spikes. It was erected after 1603, when the title of Baron was conferred.
