SP66NE ALTHORP

7/3 Althorp, East Lodges (north) 02/11/54

GV II Lodge and gatepier with gates. c.1810. Limestone ashlar with slate roofs. Lodge of one-unit plan. Single storey. Projecting centre with raised pediments and flanking half pediments. Central sash with glazing bars has flat arch with keystone flanked by 2 blind occuli. Blank window above sashes. Central ashlar stacks. Entrance facing gates has Gibbs surrounds with wrought iron lamp holder over. Cast iron screen, handgate and carriage gate attached to left and linked by 2 cast iron gatepiers surmounted by gilded balls. All cast iron in a close lattice pattern. Quadrant wall attached to right of lodge of brick with panel decoration terminated by an ashlar pier surmounted by an urn with torchere. C20 extension to rear. The lodge, gates and gatepiers form a pair with east lodge (south). (Buildings of England : Northamptonshire, p.82)
