Description

Number 4, including the garden area and railings in front, is a house dating from the early to mid-18th century, with some raising in the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone and has a slate roof with brick end stacks. The building is three storeys tall with a basement and features a two-window range. It has a two-unit central-staircase plan, with a central part-glazed panelled door that includes an overlight and a gabled hood supported by brackets. The ground and first floors have 16-pane sash windows with flat-arched heads, while the second floor has 6-pane sashes with wooden lintels. In front, there is a small raised garden area enclosed by 19th-century railings topped with spear finials.

Inside, timber partitions separate the hall from the adjacent rooms, and these partitions have fielded and raised panels. The basement, which is the original ground floor, features a stop-chamfered spine beam and an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. A central door on the outside wall of the basement is flanked by blocked windows with wooden lintels; this door, which is likely the original front door, has four raised panels, H.L. hinges, a pegged wooden surround, and a wooden lintel. This door now leads into a cellar beneath the raised garden area, which has a brick-arched half-tunnel vault. The house is also known as Wharf House.
