Description

Kingstone House is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations and additions made in the early 19th century. It is built of coursed squared limestone and features a slate roof, with brick end stacks on stone bases. The house has two storeys and an attic, with a five-window range and a two-unit, central-staircase plan.

The central panelled door is topped by an overlight and accessed by three stone steps leading to a porch supported by slender cast-iron Doric columns. The porch has a plain rendered frieze, a moulded rendered cornice, and a blocking cornice. The ground and first floors have 12-pane sash windows with stone lintels and keyblocks. The house features a chamfered plinth, chamfered stone eaves, and two roof dormers with segmental lead roofs.

To the right, there is a two-storey, one-window wing that has 2-light casement windows on both the ground and first floors, with the ground floor window featuring a stone lintel and keyblock. The depth of the house has been increased by an early 19th-century twin-gabled two-storey extension made of brick. This extension includes a central panelled part-glazed garden door with painted and coloured margin glazing, set in a fine cast-iron porch with an ogee roof.

Inside, the house boasts a fine open-well staircase that extends from the ground floor to the attic, featuring column-on-vase balusters and square newel posts. The hall has a stone-flagged floor, and there is a fitted cupboard with a round-arched head and shaped shelves. Additionally, there is a stone cellar.
