CHACOMBE CHURCH LANE SP4943 (North side) 10/63 Church of St. Peter and St. 04/02/69 Paul - I
Church. Early C14. Probably all one build. Squared coursed limestone and ironstone, slate and lead roofs. Chancel, nave with clerestory and south porch; west tower. East chancel window, Decorated style of 3 lights, reticulated tracery (renewed); windows in north and south walls also Decorated, all of 2 lights with flowing tracery (renewed). Priests doorway in south wall. East window of south aisle C14 of three lights with 4-centred head. West window similar but tracery renewed. South windows all Decorated of 2 lights with flowing tracery. Window west of porch renewed C20. South porch and south doorway Decorated. Studded ribbed plank door with decorative ironwork, probably medieval. C14 west tower, of 3 stages with castellated parapet. C14 on window ground stage similar to east and west arcades in south aisle. North aisle has 2-light Decorated windows in south and west walls and plain 2-light square-headed window at north-east corner. East window is Victorian. Blocked C16-C17 doorway with 4-centred arch and square hood in west wall. Interior: C14 piscina recess with trefoiled head in chancel. North and south arcades each of 3 bays with double chamfered arches and octagonal piers with quatrefoil capitals. Font, Romanesque; circular carved with blind arcade of intersecting arches. Brass to Michael Fox, died 1569 but made c.1545. Representation of 'The Trinity' with heraldic shields. Wall painting in jamb of north-east window north aisle, C14. Crucifixion of St. Peter.
