Description

Yew Tree Cottage is a late 17th-century cottage located on the west side of Westhorpe Lane in Byfield. It has undergone alterations in the late 18th century and the 20th century. The cottage is constructed of coursed squared ironstone and brick, with a thatched roof and brick end and ridge stacks. It follows a 3-unit lobby-entry plan. The two-storey facade has a three-window range. A 20th-century plank door, covered by a 20th-century timber hood, sits centrally, flanked by three-light chamfered mullion windows with hood moulds. The left side of the cottage has been faced with brick and contains three-light 20th-century casement windows on both the ground and first floors. Eyebrow dormers flank the centre, each containing a two-light 20th-century casement window. The interior features stop-chamfered spine beams and an open fireplace with a bread oven projecting to the rear.
