Description

Nos. 4 and 5 Welford Road are two houses dating from 1846, designed by E. Blore. They were constructed from squared coursed lias stone with ashlar dressings, and have a plain tiled roof. Each house has a two-unit plan and a two-storey, two-window front, featuring casement windows with ashlar surrounds and cast iron diamond panes. Each bay projects forward with a gable. Rebuilt brick stacks are located at the edges of the properties. Datestones bearing the Spencer arms are incorporated into the gables. Gabled porches are situated on the side elevations, featuring four-centred arched doorways and 19th-century ribbed doors. The houses were part of a planned layout for ten dwellings, accompanied by wash houses (see Nos. 1 to 3 Welford Road and the associated wash houses). The interiors have not been inspected.
