Description

The Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located on Rectory Lane in Barby. It dates from the 13th and 14th centuries and was restored in the 19th century. The church is constructed of squared coursed sandstone and sandstone ashlar, with some areas of coursed ironstone rubble in the south aisle, and features slate and lead roofs.

The layout includes a chancel with a south aisle, an aisled nave, north and south porches, and a west tower. The north wall of the chancel contains two 2-light windows with Y-tracery, dating back to around 1300, while all other windows feature 19th-century tracery. The mouldings around the doorways have been renewed, and the porches have been rebuilt. The tower, also from around 1300, has seen less alteration and includes a west lancet, bell openings with Y-tracery, a frieze of trefoiled arches supported by head corbels, and a moulded parapet inscribed with "E.J.S.R. Church Warden, 1660," likely marking a restoration.

Inside, the chancel features a 3-bay south arcade with quatrefoil piers and double chamfered arches. The nave arcade consists of 4 bays with octagonal piers, moulded capitals carved with heads and shields, and double chamfered arches. There is a small re-set Anglo-Saxon window to the west of the south doorway, along with a fragment of a medieval coffin slab with scroll decoration, which is badly eroded and set in the wall to the west of the south doorway. The church also has 18th-century altar rails with turned balusters and a collection of stained glass by Kempe and Tower dating from 1901, including an early 14th-century "Nativity" in the east window of the north aisle.
