Description
Hopthorne Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the early 18th century and was remodeled in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has two storeys and an attic. The left two bays are constructed of painted coursed rubble, while the right bay, added in the 19th century, is made of brick and also painted. The roof is covered with corrugated iron over thatch and features brick stacks.
The doorway in the second bay from the right has a concrete lintel and a 20th-century door. To the right of the door is a 20th-century three-light casement window set in a flat arched brick frame. The left bay contains a two-light casement window with a wood lintel and another two-light casement window with a rendered surround. On the first floor, there is a three-light casement window with a wood lintel in the left bay and a similar two-light window in the second bay from the left, along with a 20th-century half dormer in the right bay. A 20th-century brick extension to the right is not of special architectural interest.
Inside, the 18th-century section of the cottage features stop-chamfered spine beams and an original queen strut roof. The cottage is included for its group value.
