Description

Lodge Farm Barn is a large, three-bay barn built in the mid-18th century, located approximately 30 meters west of Lodge Farmhouse. The barn is constructed of squared, coursed limestone and features a slate-covered gable roof with coped ends. The original cart entrance openings remain unaltered, now fitted with timber-framed glazed panels and doors. On the west elevation, there are 20th-century casement windows, doors, and a small porch. Slit vents are located at the north end of both the east and west elevations, along with an inserted 20th-century door at the south end of the east elevation.

Inside, a mezzanine floor has been added, and while all fixtures and fittings date from the late 20th century, the lower part of the roof trusses is visible. This includes tie beams, purlins (some wedged in place), and exposed principal rafters.

The barn has group value with the listed farmhouse to the west. To the north, there are several outbuildings that were significantly altered in the late 19th and 20th centuries, featuring brick patching, concrete floors, and softwood timber roof trusses. Although these outbuildings are attached to the barn, they do not possess notable special interest.

Lodge Farm Barn is significant as a mid-18th century structure, converted in the late 20th century. Barns are among the most impressive types of farm buildings, and those built before 1840 are particularly rare. Despite its conversion, Lodge Farm Barn retains much of its historic fabric, including the roof, and holds sufficient architectural and historic interest to meet the criteria for listing.
