Description
The Old Rectory is a house that was originally built as a rectory in 1854, with extensions added in 1869. It was designed by E. F. Law for the Reverend Charles Hill, and features a datestone from 1854 with the initials C.S.H on the left side. The building is constructed of ironstone ashlar with limestone dressings and has a roof covered by snow at the time of the survey, along with brick stacks.
This Gothic Revival style house is in an L-plan layout, consisting of two storeys and an attic with five bays. The main block, which is to the left and has three bays, includes a central castellated tower with a doorway beneath a pointed stone arch and a double half-glazed door. To the right, there is a gabled bay featuring a canted bay window with stone mullions on the ground floor, along with a three-light stone mullioned and transomed window to the left. The first floor has a two-light stone mullioned window in the left bay, a window with two trefoil-headed lights above the entrance, and a window with three trefoiled lights to the right. The attic features two trefoil-headed lancet windows in both the right gable and the tower.
The lower wing, which is set back to the right, has two irregular gabled bays and includes three-light stone mullioned windows on the ground floor, with the left window having a transom. The left bay on the first floor has a trefoil-shaped window, while the right bay contains two pointed lights with a transom.
Inside, the rectory features a stone staircase with an iron balustrade, marble fireplaces, ornamental plaster cornices, and a stained glass screen at the entrance to the hall, which includes roundels painted with views of the church and rectory. It is said that the building was financed by the Reverend Charles Hill's father-in-law, who was a businessman from Birmingham.
