Description
Culworth House is a house, likely dating from around 1750, that was remodelled in the early 19th century. It is constructed of squared coursed ironstone, with a hipped slate roof and stone stacks. The building has two storeys and an attic, originally with five bays. A sash window now occupies the central position, replacing what was probably a former doorway. Early 19th-century bay windows with pedimented parapets and tripartite sash windows are positioned on either side. The first floor features sash windows in plain stone frames. A central attic window has an arched head and a two-light casement, with six-pane sash windows in plain stone frames on either side. A 19th-century stone porch with a pediment flanked by ball finials fronts the left side entrance, alongside a 20th-century glazed door with side lights and overlight. A service wing extends from the left side at the rear, featuring rendered walls, a slate roof, and stone stacks. Internally, one ground floor room retains 18th-century wood-panelled walls and a Rococo marble fireplace, which was brought in from somewhere else. Another ground floor room contains reused Jacobean panelling with arcading around the cornice and a panelled overmantel. The staircase dates from the early 19th century and features turned balusters. It is said that the house formerly served as the Rectory.
