Description
This cottage, now used as a garden shed, is located approximately 50 meters east of Chacombe Priory. It dates from the 18th century but includes elements from the 13th and 16th centuries. The building is constructed from uncoursed limestone and ironstone rubble, topped with a thatched roof and featuring a brick stack. It is two storeys high and has two bays.
The doorway in the right bay features a 16th-century four-centred stone arch with an inscription dating to 1591, likely added in the 18th or 19th century. There is a similar blocked doorway in the left bay. On the ground floor, there is a plain 13th-century lancet window on the right side, and above it, a 19th-century wood casement window. The rear wall has diagonal buttresses at each corner, with central ground-floor windows that have wood lintels and no glazing. The left side of the building is not accessible for inspection.
Inside, the first-floor joists date from the 18th to 19th centuries, while the chamfered main beam is probably older. The cottage is said to incorporate remains of the priory and was converted into a cottage ornee in the 18th century.
