Description
The Manor House is a late 16th-century building located on Harborough Road in Brixworth. It is constructed from lias and limestone coursed rubble with a slate roof and features a two-unit, L-plan design. The house has two storeys with an attic and a gable at the front, which includes a lean-to entrance area with a 20th-century door to the right. There are four-light stone mullion windows on the ground and first floors, and three-light stone mullion windows on the second floor. The rear gable is similar and has two and three-light stone mullion windows. An early 19th-century lean-to is attached to the building. The right gable features early 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars. The gabled roofs have ashlar gable parapets and brick and stone stacks.
Inside, the drawing room to the left of the entrance has a large 17th-century fireplace with a four-centred head and moulded spandrels. There is a winder staircase in the hall at the rear of the drawing room, which has a continuous central wooden newel to floor level, splat balusters, and a moulded handrail, likely dating from the early 17th century. Carpenter's marks can be seen on the balusters. The second-floor south room also features a 17th-century fireplace with a four-centred head and moulded spandrels. The Manor House is reputed to date from 1580 and was built for the Saunders family, who have historical connections with the Treshan family. It is believed that there was originally a second flanking cross wing.
