Description

The Brixworth War Memorial is located in the southern part of the churchyard of the notable Anglo-Saxon Grade I-listed church of All Saints’. This memorial stands approximately 6 meters tall and features a wheel-headed, foliate limestone cross that rises from a square plinth on a three-stepped octagonal base. A Greek cross is carved in relief at the bottom of the shaft on each side, with the north side displaying the inscription "1914-19."

Slate panels embedded in the plinth feature incised inscriptions and the names of those who fell:

The north panel reads: "THEY, WHOM THIS CROSS COMMEMORATES,/ WERE NUMBERED AMONG THOSE, WHO, AT/ THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY, LEFT ALL/ THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM, ENDURED HARDNESS,/ FACED DANGER, AND FINALLY PASSED OUT OF/ THE SIGHT OF MEN BY THE PATH OF DUTY AND/ SELF-SACRIFICE, GIVING UP THEIR OWN LIVES/ THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM./ LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER, SEE TO IT/ THAT THEIR NAMES BE NOT FORGOTTEN."

The east panel lists 16 names.

The south panel honors "THOSE MEN WHO GAVE THEMSELVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1939-1945" and includes 7 names and 1 name from Korea dated 28-9-1952.

The west panel contains 32 names.

Above the south panel, a small slate plaque is inscribed with "FALKLAND ISLANDS/ 1982" and includes 1 name from the Parachute Regiment.
