Description

Nos. 54 and 56 on High Street in Easton on the Hill is a house and shop, with the shop currently disused. The building dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and features a datestone marked WH/M/1823. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone and has a Collyweston slate roof. The house originally had a two-unit plan and is two storeys high with a two-window range. The windows on the right are three-light ovolo-moulded stone mullion windows with leaded lights, while the windows on the left are leaded casements under wood lintels. There is a central 20th-century door also under a wood lintel. The datestone, located between the windows on the left, may indicate alterations to the building. The attached shop on the left is likely from the 18th century and is probably two units, single storey with an attic, featuring a two-window range with panelled shutters under wood lintels. It has a central 19th-century part-glazed door under a combined lintel with a window to the left. The shop includes two gabled eaves dormers with 20th-century windows. There are brick and stone stacks at the ridge and end. The interiors have not been inspected but likely contain remains of open fireplaces.
