Description

Top Farm is a farmhouse that may have origins dating back to the 14th century, with datestones marking the years 1588, 1764, and 1888. The building features regular coursed lias and ironstone, topped with an asbestos tile and pantile roof, and has a T-shaped plan. It stands two storeys high, with the entrance front displaying a three-window range of casements that have glazing bars and are set under wooden lintels. The central entrance consists of a 19th-century four-panel door beneath a wood lintel, accompanied by a 19th-century wooden porch.

To the left, there is a projecting wing that likely dates from the early 18th century, featuring two leaded casements on the first floor of its gable end. The return wall of this wing includes a 19th-century canted wooden bay with a stone base, also fitted with leaded casements. The building is adorned with ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, as well as brick and ashlar stacks located at the ridge and ends; notably, the stack on the left gable is octagonal. Above the door, the datestones are likely reset, with an illegible tablet on the left gable. The right gable retains remnants of a 14th-century two-light window.

At the rear, an early 19th-century wing features leaded casements and a stone flight of steps leading to a door on the first floor. Inside, the first-floor room in the projecting wing showcases 17th-century panelling with a decorated frieze, which is probably reset.
