Description

67 High Street is a house with reputed origins in the 14th century, but it mainly dates from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of squared, coursed limestone and features a plain tile roof. It has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic. The main front has a four-window range of casement windows with glazing bars on the ground floor and a first-floor window to the right. There are two 19th-century sash windows and one 20th-century casement window on the first floor, all set beneath wooden lintels. A central 20th-century door is also located under a wooden lintel. To the far right, there is a carriage arch under a wooden lintel, flanked by shallow buttresses. The house features one gabled roof dormer, ashlar gable parapets, and kneelers, along with brick stacks that have ashlar plinths at the ridge and ends. The rear elevation is similar to the front. The interior has not been inspected. This building is reputed to be the birthplace of Henry Chichele, who served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1414 to 1443 and founded Chichele College, the School at Chantry Chapel of All Souls, and Bede House.
