Description
No. 40 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It likely dates from the mid-17th century and was remodeled in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of regular coursed limestone and features an asbestos tile roof. Originally, it had a two-unit lobby-entry plan and stands two storeys tall. The first floor has a two-window range of casements with glazing bars, which are set under wood lintels. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front. There is a central brick stack. Inside, the room to the left contains an open fireplace with a finely moulded and castellated bressumer, as well as spine beams. Some original roof timbers are said to remain. The building was partially converted to a shop in the 19th century.
