Description
The Former John White Shoe Factory is a factory built in 1938, designed by Sir Albert Richardson. The building features a red brick base for the semicircular bay window and painted brick above. The roof is partly hidden behind a parapet and partly visible with sloping glazing. It has a framed construction supported by metal columns. The front is symmetrical with a central projection that extends further out, featuring a segmental bay window with curved glass. The glazing, set in original metal frames, continues as ribbon windows on either side of the bay. Above, there is a deep brick parapet. The basement, which is semicircular and made of red brick, projects below the center and is accessed by a flight of steps on both sides. Full-height glazing is present between brick piers to the left and right of the center. There is a projecting entrance porch on the north side, constructed with glass bricks, as well as a rear entrance that also features glass bricks. At the rear, a tall chimney made of black painted brick, square in plan, rises with battered sides and a cornice. This factory is a rare example of a building by this significant classical architect.
