Description
Knight's Cottage is a house located on Main Street in Woodnewton, originally shown as Manor Cottage on the ordnance survey map. It dates from the 17th century and was extended in the early 18th century. The building is constructed of squared coursed limestone and lias, topped with a Collyweston slate roof. It has an original two-unit plan that has been modified to a three-unit plan. The house is a single storey with an attic and features a three-window range.
The central window is a five-light, canted stone mullion window with ovolo moulding and a slate roof. To the far right, there is a small 19th-century casement window, and to the left, a horizontal sliding sash window with glazing bars, both set under wooden lintels. Three hipped eaves dormers also have similar horizontal sliding sash windows. A plank door, located to the right of the center, is set under a wooden lintel. The building retains the remains of ashlar stacks at the ridge and end.
There is a 20th-century one-bay extension to the right, which was in progress at the time of inspection. The rear elevation is similar, featuring horizontal sliding sash windows. Inside, the central room includes an open fireplace with a bressumer. The room to the right was added in the 18th century, and the doorway between this room and the central room was originally an external door. The 20th-century extension to the right is not of special architectural interest.
