Description
Franey House is a Grade II listed building located on Main Street in Woodnewton. It consists of two houses that have been combined into one dwelling. The building features a datestone inscribed with "John Franey/1745" and dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone and has a roof made of Collyweston slate.
The original layout included one-and two-unit plans. The right side of the house has two bays that date from the 18th century, featuring a single-storey, two-window range of 19th-century sash windows at the ground floor, all set under wooden lintels. Above, there are two smaller sash windows beneath hipped eaves dormers in the attic. The central entrance is a four-panel door also located under a wooden lintel. The gable ends are adorned with ashlar parapets and kneelers, and there are brick and stone stacks at the ridge and ends.
To the left is an early 19th-century bay that was originally a one-unit dwelling. This section is two storeys high and has a two-window range of leaded casements at the first floor, located under the eaves, and a 19th-century casement with a stone lintel and keyblock at the ground floor. There is a plank door to the right of this window, also under a similar head. A brick stack is located at the end of this part of the building. The interior has not been inspected. John Franey, the original owner, was a stonemason.
