Description

Cairn Cottage is a mid-18th century house located on the south side of Main Street, Woodnewton. Shown as Chapel Cottage on Ordnance Survey maps, the house was originally two rooms in plan. It is constructed of squared, coursed limestone and lias, with a roof of Collyweston slate. The building is single storey with an attic, and has a two-window front. The windows are 19th-century casements beneath wooden lintels. A pair of gabled eaves dormers are present, with matching casements and glazed sides. A central four-panel door is set beneath a wooden lintel. The house has ashlar gable parapets and brick and stone stacks at each end. A lean-to extension has been added to the rear. The interior was noted to retain remains of an open fireplace with a bressumer, although it has not been inspected.
