Description
The George Hotel and Restaurant is a hotel, restaurant, and house located on Stamford Road in Weldon. The hotel dates from the mid-18th century, while the former shop, now part of the hotel, was built in the mid-19th century. The building features a limestone ashlar exterior with Collyweston slate and Welsh slate roofs.
Originally designed with a three-unit plan, the hotel has a central carriage arch and stands two storeys tall with an attic. It has a four-window range, including two two-storey semi-circular bow windows with glazing bars flanking the carriage arch. On the far left, there is a 19th-century sash and casement window on both the ground and first floors, all set under stone lintels with keyblocks. A small casement window is positioned under the eaves above the carriage arch, which also has two eaves dormers to the left. The segmental carriage arch features doors on either side, while ashlar stacks are located at the ridge and ends of the building.
To the right of the carriage arch is the shop with a house above, which is now part of the hotel. This section has three storeys, with a two-window range on the first floor and three windows on the second floor, all of which are sash windows under stone lintels with keyblocks. The central double doors are flanked by 19th-century shop windows that project forward. The interior includes an open fireplace with a bressumer and stop-chamfered spine beams.
