Description
Westwood Lodge is a house located on Benefield Road in Glapthorn, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with mid-18th century restorations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of squared coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and features a Collyweston slate roof. Originally likely designed as a one-unit plan, it has been altered to an L-shape. The house is single-storey with an attic and cellar.
The front has a one-window range with a 19th-century casement window, which is set under a wooden lintel to the left. There is a similar casement window in a hipped eaves dormer in the attic. To the right, there is a plank door under a wooden lintel. The building has ashlar quoins, ashlar gable parapets, and a stone stack at the end, along with a brick and stone lateral stack at the rear. The right gable features similar windows under wooden and concrete lintels.
At the rear, there is a mid-18th century wing with 20th-century single-storey extensions. Inside, the room to the left of the entrance has an open fireplace with a bressumer and a rear fire window. The kitchen at the rear retains the remains of an open fireplace. The first floor features a dog leg stair and original stud walls. The lodge is noted to have been a lodging house for drovers.
