Description

Berkeley House is a house dating from the early 18th century, with additions and alterations from the late 19th century and a mid-20th century restoration. It is constructed from squared coursed limestone with a Collyweston slate roof. Originally, the house likely had a 2-unit plan with additional buildings, but it now forms an irregular L-shape. The two-storey main front has a four-window arrangement, featuring two pairs of sash windows with glazing bars, set beneath wooden lintels. Four hipped roof dormers, each containing a casement window, are visible. The roof features ashlar gable parapets and a central ashlar stack. A one-window range attached to the right is likely from the 19th century, with windows in a 19th-century style set under wooden lintels. A similar one-window range, of single-storey and reconstructed in the mid-20th century, is attached further to the right. A gable on the left side of the main front reveals a 2-light stone mullion window illuminating a cellar, and evidence of blocked windows at both ground and first floor levels. A mid-19th century wing projecting at right angles to the rear includes a 19th-century stone porch which projects to the left of the main front. The interior features a late-19th century staircase and a large central stack.
