Description
The Covered Tennis Court at Cliveden Estate, built around 1900 by an unknown designer, features a grey and red brick exterior with a partially glazed roof. Its classical design includes a triple-arched ground floor on the main gabled west-facing end, although the arched openings are now filled with boarding. Above this, there is a large window with a wrought iron balcony supported by a stone ledge, framed by a rusticated surround with a segmental arch above. The sides have recessed bays, and the south side includes an end pavilion with arched ground floor entrances and bull's-eye windows on the upper floor. The other sides have lower ancillary structures that are not considered of special interest.
Inside, the court is spacious, featuring an open bowstring-trussed roof, with smaller rooms located around the sides. Historically, this building was about half a mile southeast of the main house and served as a significant addition to the Cliveden estate's amenities during the Astor years. It was also used as a Canadian military hospital during the First World War and later became part of a larger hospital complex to the south, which began construction in 1915 under the design of Major Charles Skipper.
