Description

The landing steps and bridge located to the south of Spring Lodge were built around 1900 for W W Astor by T Waldo Story. This structure features stone Renaissance style balustrades on a small bridge that spans the outflow from a pond to the River Thames. At right angles to the bridge, similar balustrades flank the stone steps that lead down to the river's edge. The balustrades are modeled after the Villa Borghese balustrade and include turned balusters and eagles on the piers. The pond is the outflow of a mineral spring that was popular as a miniature spa in the early 19th century.
