Description
The Barn at Church Farm is a large aisled barn dating from the 15th to 16th century, with some alterations. It features a heavy timber frame with old brick infill and alternate bays that have curved braces. The chamfered plinth is partly made of ashlar on the northwest side, while the rest has been rebuilt in brick or flint with ashlar or rendered capping. The gable facing the street was rebuilt in the 18th century using red and vitreous brick, with 20th-century weatherboarding added to the gable. The barn has an old tile roof and consists of ten bays, with ventilation slits present. The southwest side has irregular boarded openings, while the northeast side includes a waggon entry in the third bay and 20th-century water tanks attached to the fourth bay. There are mid-19th-century white brick ranges of outbuildings forming a courtyard with the far bays. Inside, there are low walls of Totternhoe stone between the aisle bays, and the complex main trusses feature curved braces to the aisle tie beams, arcade plates, tie beams, and principal rafters, along with curved passing braces to the tie beams. The intermediate trusses have curved braces to the middle purlins, and the roof is supported by triple purlins and curved wind-braces. A floor has been inserted in the northwest end. The barn is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
