Description

Kensham Farmhouse is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th century. It features a cross wing from the 16th to 17th centuries, along with 20th-century extensions and modifications. The building is mostly rebuilt in brick, with some flint, and the northern wall retains a timber frame with thin brick infill and a plinth. It has old tile roofs and a large chimney stack with two diagonal shafts of narrow brick at the left end, as well as another similar chimney, which has been partly rebuilt, at the center of the cross wing.

The farmhouse is designed in an L-plan with a staircase projection at the rear angle and consists of one storey and an attic. The front has two gabled bays, with the right bay on the ground floor made of flint. There is a brick band course at first floor level. The 20th-century paired barred wooden casements feature cambered heads on the ground floor and segmental heads above. A central old board door is set within a 20th-century gabled brick porch that has an arched entry.

To the left, there is a 19th-century hipped extension made of reused narrow brick, which includes a similar casement and a later 19th-century lean-to at the left end. Inside, the left bay was originally an open hall, featuring a central base cruck truss with chamfered arch-braces to the collar and a stop-chamfered aisle plate with a curved brace along the west side. A chimney stack and floor were inserted in the 16th century, along with a massive spine beam and slightly chamfered heavy joists. The front right room contains early 17th-century panelling, and there is a winder staircase.
