Description

Huckenden Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 16th to 17th century, with alterations and later additions from the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed of flint with brick dressings, featuring dentil eaves and old tile roofs, with a brick chimney in the centre of the cross wing. The earliest part of the house consists of one storey and an attic, with two gabled bays and a lobby entry in the central half bay. A central chimney has been removed above the roofline. There are 20th-century leaded casement windows and a 20th-century door in a lean-to timber porch. A two-storey, attic cross wing to the left has similar casements in altered openings with brick Tudor hoodmoulds. The left side exhibits a small central gable with staircase windows and a 20th-century lean-to porch. Some slight timber framing with brick infill is visible in the rear gable and on the upper walls of the right side. To the right of the original part is a later bay with another 20th-century door in a lean-to porch, and a long, single-storey wing, formerly outbuildings, set at an angle, with matching casements, garage doors, and a gabled bay at the right end. Internally, the earliest bays have timber-framed cross walls, chamfered spine beams with stop-chamfered joists, and good curved wind-braces. Winder stairs are located in the centre of the cross wing.
