Description
A group of three houses, originally instituted as a workhouse in 1754, is located on Wheeler End Common, West Wycombe. The eastern range dates back to approximately 1600, with a smaller 17th-18th century extension to the north end and a 17th-century gabled projection to the west, creating a T-plan layout. An early 19th-century block is situated in the southwest angle, with 20th-century lean-to extensions, and further 20th-century extensions around the north end. The eastern range is rendered and colourwashed, with a rendered chimney between the two approximately 1600 bays and an old tile roof. Parts of the left gable and the gable of the western projection are tile-hung. The early 19th-century block is constructed of flint with brick dressings, dentil eaves, a rendered and colourwashed south end, and a hipped old tile roof with a brick chimney. The older parts of the building are single-storey with an attic, featuring irregular wooden casements and dormers in the eaves, with one leaded light in the left dormer. The early 19th-century block is two storeys and two bays, with irregular wooden casements. Entries are located in 20th-century lean-to extensions to the west and in the 17th-century western gable. The interior of the approximately 1600 bays reveals heavy timber framing with curved wall braces and wind-braces; lighter framing is present in the 17th-18th century bays.
