Description
The Church of St Nicholas is a parish church with a medieval nave and chancel, which were partly rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries and heavily restored in 1886. The north aisle, west porch, organ chamber, vestry, and belfry were added in 1862, while the south transept was added in 1886. The church is constructed of knapped flint and chalk, with the nave featuring tile quoins and the remainder having stone dressings. It has a plain tile roof and a roughcast belfry. Most of the windows are from the 19th century, featuring trefoil-headed lights in rectangular stone surrounds. The nave includes buttresses and a two-light louvred window at the west end, along with two two-light windows on the south side and a small transept projecting from the center of the south side. The short belfry has narrow louvred openings on the north and south sides, a pyramid roof, and a wrought iron weather vane. The north aisle contains single and two-light windows, a north door with a two-centred arch, and a gabled porch with an arched door at the west end. The vestry and organ chamber to the north of the chancel have a hipped roof and a small gable to the east. The chancel features two small cusped lancets, possibly from the 15th century, on the south side, and a 19th-century three-light east window with reticulated tracery. Various 18th and 19th-century memorial tablets and one stone coffin lid are attached to the walls.
