Description

The garden walls to the south of Hedsor Priory are dated 1583, as indicated by a block in the southeast wall. Parts of the walls were restored in the 19th century, and a section of the southwest wall was rebuilt around 1971. These walls were constructed for Roland Hynd, who also re-edified the church. The walls are made of knapped flint and chalk blocks arranged in a chequer pattern, with narrow brick quoins and early 19th-century tiled coping featuring a course of cogged brick below. The high L-shaped wall has a spur on the northeast side leading to the house, and a lower spur with an archway at the west end. The archway features a four-centred arch made of wave-moulded brick within a hollow-chamfered square-headed surround. The spur to the house contains two niches with pointed heads, which may have been small bee-boles. Each of the main walls has a central recess with a low four-centred brick arch, and there are later buttresses. The wall may incorporate elements from a medieval building.
