Description

Corner House is a house that dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with alterations and extensions made in the early 19th century, and further changes in the late 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with late 19th-century stone dressings, featuring a plain-tile roof and brick stacks at the ends and ridge. The house has a two-unit, through-passage plan and is two stories tall with a two-window range.

The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with panelled reveals, a moulded wood surround, and a shallow straight hood above. The ground and first floors are fitted with two-light leaded casement windows that have chamfered stone sills and lintels. The eaves are dentilled brick. To the left, there is a one-storey extension with four-light leaded casements, also featuring stone sills and lintels. To the right, a two-storey extension has two-light leaded casement windows on both floors with similar sills and lintels. The right end section forms a shallow cross wing, which has quoins made of limestone and ironstone.

At the rear, the garden front includes a central part-glazed door with an overlight and a moulded wood surround, along with sash windows on both floors that have wooden lintels. The back wall of the two-storey extension has been rebuilt in 20th-century brick. This house is said to be located on the site of the residence occupied by Oliver Cromwell during the Civil War.
