Description

Chearsley House, previously known as Lower Green Farmhouse, dates from the 16th and 17th centuries and was altered in the 19th century. The building features a timber-framed left or south crosswing, with the main range and right crosswing constructed of rubblestone. The entire structure was roughcast around 1850 and has cement dressings, topped with old tile roofs. It stands two storeys high with two bay crosswings; the right crosswing has an additional bay added to the rear around 1950.

The east or front elevation showcases a central arched doorway flanked by single light windows, all enclosed in a projecting sun-room porch. Above, there is a gabled three-light dormer. The crosswings feature three-light casements with transoms, smooth cement architraves, and moulded labels. The 17th-century flanking stacks have rubblestone lower parts that weather up to brick bases, with diagonally set flues topped with moulded heads and base strings; the left wing has two shafts, while the right wing has three.

Inside, the left-hand wing reveals exposed timber framing in the upper rooms, with straight wall and tie beam braces also visible in the central stairwell. The interior features chamfered and stopped spine beams. The original roof in the left-hand wing includes queen strut and collar trusses, along with curved purlin braces.
