Description
The subway under the road southwest of the stable block at Hartwell House was constructed around 1765. It provides access beneath the public road from the gardens surrounding Hartwell House to the upper kitchen and flower gardens. The structure is made of rustic stone and features a facade on the east side with three roughly semicircular arches supported by piers. In the center, there is a low arched entrance that has an old, heavily studded wooden door. Tall stone parapets flank each side of the road, adorned with fragments of carved stonework.
