Description
The Church of St. Mary is a parish church, now redundant and roofless, built between 1753 and 1755 by Henry Keene in the Gothic Revival style. It was designed as a feature in the park of Hartwell House. The church is constructed of ashlar stone and has an octagonal plan with towers at the east and west, although the west tower has been removed. It features a battlemented parapet and a moulded cornice, with a moulded string below the attic quatrefoil windows. The main windows are three-light with Y tracery and crocketted ogee hoods. There are rose windows in the north and south bays, as well as on the east side of the tower, which has an openwork parapet and pinnacles. The interior is now a ruin, with slight evidence of a former plaster fan vaulted ceiling.
