Description

The stable block and attached coachhouse, located southwest of Hartwell House, dates from the 18th century and has been altered, possibly incorporating stables attributed to Gibbs as depicted in the Nebot paintings housed in the County Museum. The central arch, designed by Henry Keene in 1759, replaced an earlier portico. The building is constructed of rubble stone with ashlar dressings and features an old tile roof.

To the north of the archway, there is a two-storey cottage, while the south side has a two-storey structure with lofts. The west front includes an archway to the left of the centre in a projecting bay, featuring an impost band and cornice with a parapet above. The large semicircular arch has alternate voussoirs that are vermiculated. There are two bays of four-pane wide sash windows and a door to the left, while the right side has stables with five round-headed windows and two doors. A pedimented loft entrance in the fourth bay from the archway is marked with a keyblock dated 1873.

The east front has a similar archway opening but with a concave surround. Each side features three-light Venetian windows, and there are six sash windows with heavy glazing bars and leaded panes beneath flat moulded cornices and moulded architraves. Inside the carriage arch, there are four eight-panel doors with deeply moulded architraves and pediments, and a shallow groin vaulted plaster ceiling. The coachhouse range to the south is also made of stone with a tiled roof, and the north side has four large segmental-headed carriage door openings flanked by two smaller doors.
