Description

This is a pair of cottages dated 1876, marked by a plaque reading "H de R 1876," and subsequently altered. They are constructed of red brick, with sections whitewashed and incorporating roughcast and coloured half-timbering to the first floor of the gabled bays. The roof is tiled, featuring fishscale patterning in places, and includes a large brick chimney with pilasters. The cottages are two storeys and two bays wide. The gabled bay on the right has a canted bay window on the ground floor and a jettied first floor with a three-light wooden casement window. A whitewashed date plaque, flanked by herringbone panels, sits below the upper window. A narrow porch on the right has a single light to the front and a side entry. The left bay features paired eaves-breaking casement windows on the first floor and altered French doors below. The cottages are symmetrical with numbers 9 and 10 and resemble numbers 4 and 5. They are part of a group of picturesque estate cottages built for Hannah de Rothschild, designed in a style influenced by the work of George Devey at Ascott.
