Description

A pair of cottages dated 1876, built as part of a group of picturesque estate cottages for Hannah de Rothschild. They were designed in a style influenced by the work of George Devey at Ascott. The cottages are constructed of red brick with whitewashed roughcast and half-timbering to the first floor of the left bay, and altered tile-hanging to the right side. They have a hipped tile roof with some fishscale patterning and a central brick chimney, partially rebuilt, and another chimney to the left side. The cottages are two storeys and have two asymmetrical bays. The left bay has a gabled form with a jettied first floor supported on brackets, a canted bay window to the ground floor, and a 3-light wooden casement to the first floor. A porch to the left has a single light to the front and an entry to the side. The right bay features a cross casement with a segmental head to the ground floor and a 2-light eaves-breaking casement above. A whitewashed terracotta date plaque, flanked by herringbone panels, is located below the upper left-hand window. The cottages are symmetrical to Nos. 13 and 14, and similar in style to Nos. 4 and 5.
