Description

Hillview is a house, likely originally two cottages, dating to around 1876. A defaced date plaque indicates the year of construction. The house is built of red brick with half-timbering to the upper left bay, ornamental tile hanging to the top of the gable and the first floor of the right bay. The roof is tiled, with a hipped section to the left and a half-hipped section to the right, and includes fishscale patterning. Rebuilt brick chimneys are present.

The house is two storeys high and features two asymmetrical bays. The left bay is gabled and projects, with the first floor jettied and featuring a coved overhang. It has three-light barred wooden casement windows; the first-floor window is an oriel with a coved base. A chimney and a 20th-century rendered single-storey extension are located on the left side. A 20th-century door is positioned in the right return wall. The right bay has a chimney to the left and no windows.

Hillview was built as part of a group of picturesque estate cottages around The Green (now a Recreation Ground) for Hannah de Rothschild, and its style was influenced by the work of George Devey at Ascott nearby.
