Description
Nos. 4 and 5 Recreation Ground are a pair of cottages built in 1876, as indicated by a plaque. They are constructed of red brick with half-timbered jettied gables featuring whitewashed roughcast infill. The cottages have a hipped tile roof that includes some fishscale patterning and an original large central brick chimney with pilasters. The buildings are two storeys high and have two asymmetrical bays.
The left bay features a canted bay window on the ground floor and a jettied gabled first floor with an altered 20th-century casement window. There is a porch on the left with a 20th-century single light window at the front and an entry to the side. The right bay has a cross casement window with a segmental head on the ground floor and a 20th-century eaves-breaking casement above. A whitewashed terracotta date plaque is located below the upper left-hand window, flanked by herringbone panels. There are also 20th-century extensions to the rear.
These cottages are part of a picturesque group built for Hannah de Rothschild, designed in a style influenced by the nearby work of George Devey at Ascott.
