Description

The Green's Nos. 3 and 4 are a pair of cottages built in 1877, as indicated by an initialed terracotta plaque. They are constructed of red brick with half-timbering and colourwashed roughcast infill on the gabled portion of the first floor. The roofs are tiled, incorporating fishscale tiles, and feature brick chimneys with pilasters. The cottages are two storeys high with an asymmetrical design of two bays. They have wooden casement windows.

The right bay of the north front projects and is gabled, featuring a coved jetty to the first floor. The upper portion of the gable is tilehung and overhangs. A four-light casement window is on the ground floor, while the first floor has an oriel window set on a coved base, flanked by herringbone brick panels. The left bay has a cross casement window on the ground floor’s left side, a chimney, and a porch with a blocked entry where it meets the right bay. The porch has a hipped tile roof supported by turned wooden balusters. A lean-to addition provides entry to the left side of the building. The right side of the cottages features a lean-to with a hipped dormer. Modern, half-timbered extensions have been added to the rear.

These cottages are part of a picturesque group commissioned around the green for Hannah de Rothschild, influenced by the architectural style of nearby work by George Devey at Ascott. The green itself is now a recreation ground.
