SP 71 SW UPPER WINCHENDON MAIN ROAD north side

2/368 Barn and Stable to south of Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene -

GV II

Barn, converted to stables. C18, altered late C18. Timber framed and weatherboarded on a brick plinth. Old tile roof, half hipped. 7 bays with late C18 additional bay at west as grooms cottage. South elevation has 2 former wagon porches in bays 2 and 6. Gabled with inserted C19 3-centred timber arches. Between cart entries eaves extended as catslide over 'aisle'. Grooms cottage bay has 2-light gabled dormer. North or road elevation has cart entries boarded across and brick infill to plinth height, stone jambs to west entry. Truncated stack to groom's cottage bay. Interior: Tie-beams cut to form upper storey with trimming posts. Curved tie-beam braces remain. Colourwashed rubblestone partition walls and passage wall inserted when converted. Hayloft door at east with swivelling hoist arm. Double butt purlin roof.
