Description
The Lodge to Whelprigg is a building dating from 1860. It is constructed of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a hexagonal slate roof. The lodge has two storeys and three bays, with the third bay projecting under a gable. The gables are coped and topped with finials, and the building has quoins.
The windows are hollow-chamfered mullioned, featuring elliptical-headed lights, with some being sashed. Most windows have label moulds. On the ground floor, there is a three-light window in the first bay and a three-light bay window with a cornice and hipped roof in the third bay. The first floor has two-light windows, with the first bay window located under a gablet and the second bay featuring straight-headed lights. The third bay has a three-light window.
The entrance is located in a gabled porch with a round-arched opening and an additional opening to the return. The left return has a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window above, along with an escutcheon on the gable. The right return consists of two bays, with the first bay breaking forward under a gable. It has three-light windows, but the second bay on the first floor features a two-light window under a gablet, along with a datestone on the gable. The building has a cross-axial stack and a stack at the rear gable end.
