Description

Stables House and the garden wall immediately to the northeast of Whelprigg date from 1845. The building is constructed of dressed stone with some ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. It is arranged in a U-shape with a garden to the west. The east range serves as the house and consists of seven bays, with the first and sixth bays gabled and the bay in the center breaking forward under a coped gable topped with a ball finial. The windows are sashed with glazing bars and horns. There is a 20th-century gabled timber porch on the third bay, a large entrance in the first bay, and two entrances in the fifth bay. The building has two cross-axial stacks and an additional cross-axial stack in the wing.

The south gable end features a tall window with a transom, a label mould, and small-paned glazing. The west elevation has sashed windows and three entrances at the left-hand end. The north range, which is part of the stables, includes a large opening that is now blocked and has a label mould. The west range of the stables has a large opening to the east with timber infill and large doors, a stable entrance with an overlight, flanking windows with small-paned glazing, and a pitching hole under a gablet, all with label moulds, as well as an elliptical-headed entrance. The south gable end of this range also has a ball finial.

The walls and large gate piers between the south gable ends flank a large entrance that features an iron overthrow for a lantern. The west elevation is mostly blind except for two inserted windows. Three gabled elements break forward, with ball finials on the outer gables and a spike finial, likely a weather vane, on the central gable. The garden wall has a flat ashlar coping, and the canted south-west angle has a lower wall that ramps up to the ends. The west entrance features a triangular head in splayed reveals with a label mould and a wrought-iron gate, with the wall ramped up above.
