Description

The property is a house, built in 1834 by George Webster for Joseph Gibson. It is constructed from stone rubble with ashlar dressings, with the south facade entirely in ashlar. The roofs are slate-covered.

The south facade is of two storeys with an attic, and features five bays. The second and fourth bays are narrower and project forward, while the outer bays further project under gables. A dripcourse runs above the ground floor windows, and a top cornice and blocking course are present. The gables are coped and incorporate three corbelled pinnacles topped with ball finials. Rusticated quoins are also a feature. The windows are double-chamfered mullioned with transoms, consisting mostly of three lights, although the second and fourth bays and those flanking the entrance have single lights. The windows in the gables are stepped. The upper floor windows have small-paned glazing. A gablet above the central first-floor window includes a cartouche displaying an armorial bearing, the date, and the initials "JG", alongside two spike finials and a weathervane.

The west elevation is similar to the south facade, with a two-storey, three-bay service wing extending northwards. The main part of the house features four bays, with the outer bays projecting forward to include two-storey canted bay windows. The central bays have two-light windows with gables above. The service wing has two-light windows and an entrance with sidelight and overlight to the third bay. Gable-end stacks are present on the outer bays.

The north elevation has two gabled bays with a later infill bay. The first bay incorporates a projecting gable-end stack. The east elevation features a canted projection to the gabled first bay, a recessed third bay over a lean-to kitchen, a four-light stair window, and pointed windows with glazing bars in the second bay return, along with a stack. The end bays include a gabled dormer and a three-storey gabled canted bay, with a gable-end stack.

Internally, the house includes ribbed plaster ceilings, stone fireplaces, and panelling. The entrance hall features a staircase with two sides, a gallery on both sides with turned balusters, a pendant ceiling, and a skylight. The dining room has an alcove with a fitted sideboard, and the fireplace contains a copper Art Nouveau insert. The library contains bookcases with small-paned glazing. A datestone above the entrance reads "EGM/1700".
