Description

Box Tree Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-18th century and later. It is constructed from limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has quoins and stands two storeys high, with three irregularly spaced windows on the first floor and a rear outshut. The central entrance is a board door set within a chamfered quoined surround. To the left of the door is a large 20th-century two-light mullion window, while to the right is an 18th-century three-light window with flat-faced mullions. The first floor has recessed and chamfered windows with two, two, and three lights. There are corniced ashlar stacks on the right gable, a ridge stack to the right of the door, and a large banded stack on the left gable. On the left return, there is a projecting semicircular oven located to the left of centre, along with a two-light recessed and chamfered mullioned window on both the ground and upper floors of the outshut. The interior has not been inspected during the resurvey, but it was reported in 1982 to contain a large chamfered segmental-arched fireplace on the ground floor to the left, featuring a keystone and flanking blocks incised to resemble voussoirs. Additionally, there is a plaster panel depicting vines and a moulded arch, which may have been reset, at the top of the stairs.
