Description

The Old School in Dent is a National School building, now serving as a school hall and public meeting room. It is dated 1845 on the porch and has been altered over time. The structure is made of coursed squared sandstone with freestone quoins and dressings, topped by a graduated slate roof. It has a rectangular plan oriented on an east-west axis, facing north, with a projecting porch.

The building is single-storey with four symmetrical windows. The central feature is a large gabled porch that includes a round-headed doorway with a chamfered surround, an arched hoodmould, and double board doors fitted with strap hinges. Above the doors is a panel inscribed with "NATIONAL / SCHOOL / 1845," which is also topped with a hoodmould. The gable has coping and kneelers. On either side of the porch are two tall 2-light mullioned windows with round-headed lights and hoodmoulds. The building has plain gutter brackets and coped gables with kneelers. Originally, there were a pair of diagonal chimneys and a cone-shaped ventilator, but these are now missing. At the rear, there is a 20th-century single-storey school building attached.

Inside, the space consists of one vessel and has been altered. The Old School forms a group with the Old Post Office located diagonally opposite.
